Default How much did your valve adjustment cost at the stealership?

Hey Vol family, I'm new to motorcycle tinkering. I've got an 05 C50 that I've already done a couple of mods to, changed the oil, cleaned the air filter, small stuff like that. It just got past 18000 miles and I'd like to get the valves adjusted beccuse I'm getting a slapping noise at around 50mph. I figured that may be the cause and I don't know when they were last adjusted. (Bought it at 15000 mi. three months ago) I called a couple of stealerships in my area to get an estimate for a valve adjustment. One said $230 while another said $65. Why so different I thought. So what did you pay. I'd love to learn to do it myself but would like to actually see it being done rather than rely on pictures and manuals. Thanks for your imput.

Anyone that is willing to do it, properly, for $65.00 is either a crook who will just wipe the valve covers and return the bike to you, or has never done a C50/Volusia adjustment before yours. Labor rates tells me $65.00 is worth about 45 minutes. Anyone that can remove the tank, remove the valve covers, set bike on TDC, adjust valves (JPaige or feeler method), reinstall valve covers, reinstall tank, write up repair order and move bike to customer pickup all within 45 minutes would be interesting to watch.

IMO, anyone doing the job for $65.00, is not going to be around when I have a come-back on his work.

You should check the forum membership to see if anyone lives close to you. Quite a few members do their own valve adjustments and someone might be willing to help you out. They could give you some training, you could furnish the beer and you might have a new friend to go riding with.

WoodWelder did it in Ronnie's garage in about 15 minutes for free!

Default Valve adj Pricing

Just last Thursday, I was quoted $250 just to look at it and if they need to be adjusted I was looking at $400+. http://www.ctpowersports.com/ This was at the stealership and the quote was provided by a little pimple faced kid that actually said I'd also need to purchase some head gaskets if they have to "tear" into it. I guess they need to pay for that pretty new building they built.....

I'll be doing this one myself.

Now exactly what did WoodWelder do in Ronnie's garage? Did it involve rapid back and forth motion of his hand for 15 minutes? Even if it were for free, I think some things should just be done for himself in the privacy of his own room.

When Garn and I were working on his bike the last time we were able to tear it down and do the valves and put it all back together in less than an hour. What we went through to get that experience I don't recommend. There were many stripped nuts and lost pieces and what not that caused the whole thing to take weeks including waiting for parts to arrive. We know how to do it now and it will be easy next time.

That's what I'm trying to avoid. I live in southwest Florida so if anyone is in the area and is willing to teach me I be more than willing to suply the refreshments. From reading other threads about adjusting valves, I'm pretty sure I've got all the tools too.

My local stealership told me around $500 to adjust the valves. I thought that was crazy and obviously haven't done it yet... I guess I'll have to learn how to do it myself.
