Ok, so I'm about 4 months late in a formal introduction. But I have plenty of time on my hands today as off work for the holidays and it's a mini-monsoon in North Carolina today. Here is my story:
I'm a new operator and my 2001 Vol is my first bike. I passed the MSF course Aug 2012 but not happy with my skills. Instructor advised to get my endorsement, buy a bike, and PRACTICE. I bought my Vol because it looked good and in my price range. Honestly, I didn't even test drive it because the seller lived on a gravel road and no way was I taking it out on that. He rode it around his concrete drive and and I plunked down the cash. It was an adventure getting it home and had a mishap before I ever put 1 miles on it. Needless to say, invest in GOOD straps if you haul a bike in your truck! I think I made a great choice as everyone thinks I spent a lot more on this bike than I did. It suits me very well right now but one day, I would like to splurge and buy a Victory. I am an atypical weekend warrior as I have a very demanding job and a family. I'll never be a 10K miles a year guy because i just don't have time. I also don't like to ride in the rain. Guess I'll never be a badazz biker guy but that's ok, I missed that window a long time ago! haha I don't mind riding in the the cold, but the NC winter is not that severe. At 45 and with a young child, I'm ATGATT. It's a personal choice. I like this forum. Good info and with entertainment to boot. I even picked a decent buy in the swap shop. Thanks and ride safe. |

EH!
<---<< Your reasons for buying your bike were the same as mine, but it only took me two months to introduce myself!

morning...happy holidays..and welcome to a great and friendly world of folks here. The vol is a great bike and will bring you lots of happy smiles and great memories and if you decide to ride with company, you'll also get to make some good friends sharing the same passion along the way. Ride safe, enjoy and glad to read you prefer to dress to ride....as for being a badazz biker dude...its all in the eyes of the beholder...

Hate to say it but I've only put 800 miles on her since August. It's hard to justify spending all Saturday or Sunday riding when your 5 year old wants you home to play. But I get a few short rides in here and there and that's enough for now. Still improving my skills and plenty of time down the road for more miles. The wife is ready to ride 2up but I've told her no way right now. Plus, that's my ace in the hole for justifying a more powerful bike down the road. hehehe Ideally, keep the Vol too.
As I read back through my post, I realized how crazy it sounds to buy a motorcycle without even a test ride. It just felt right and the seller seemed liked a real good guy. We talked a long time and he even called me later to make sure I got home ok with it. Happy Holidays everyone!! The sun just came out so maybe I can ride later today!! |

I struggle with time vs. the 4 year old son of mine. But, I take the bike to work, run around for an hour here and there, many short hops are more to my liking....1 to 2 hours.
My first bike was a 2006 Boulevard C50T. Never rode before. No test ride. I had the same good feeling with my seller. Had it hauled to my house, then round the block I started. Now I average about 1000 miles per month, year round, of course more in the summer, less in the winter. Most of that in 100 mile increments or less. Of course when you get a faster bike, it helps with time out.

Yeah, you feel a little selfish sometimes but you pick your opportunities. I too like the short hops as opposed to the longer rides. And back roads.
First night of the MSF course, we all had to stand and say a few words about ourselves and our bikes. I was surprised that I was the ONLY one out of a full class that did not own a bike. Several had never ridden at all like me but had purchased bikes - one had bought a brand new HD! I wondered if they bought without a test drive, but then I did the same thing! But at least I was "legit' as I had passed the MSF course and had my endorsement. haha I looked at three bikes and could see the reservations in the eyes of the seller about handing over the keys when I admitted I was a new operator. I only test drove one bike, but it had a fouled carburetor and could never get to up to speed. Bad enough to be little nervous but then the darn thing kept cutting out; surprised now I didn't dump it. |

WELCOME FROM ROMANIA AND MARRY CHRISTMAS....
OPINION: Just seen that Volusia is the first choice for many of us, nomatter if we buy our first horse when were a young gun or a old dog.... Miself i bought my ponny, in a crucial moment of my life... midlife crisis...i will be 40 on 24 january and i used to be a bike lover and rock music fan all my life....AC/DC RULES.. I also thinked about the money so the volusia from 2003 with 18000km, cost me 4000 euro. So, and this is not for good people, I DONT CARE IF MY BIKE IS NOT A HARLEY.....YOURS ISNT A VOLUSIA !!!!!!!!! |

Welcome from Toronto Canada. I too am a late bloomer. I bought my first bike just over 14 months ago . 07 C50Tish Moto-Suzzi. With the mods I have made to it , I hope to keep it for a quite a few years. At first I thought I made a big mistake after my first ride on the Super Slab but since I installed the M50Dave'd dj drive, I am really happy with the bike ( ok I mostly supervised a few of my new found buds on here install it ) . Just waiting for my Step bit to arrive and I will complete the GMan air box mod with a K&N air filter and will change the settings on the GMan FI processer.
