So Woodswoman has been mourning the approaching end of the riding season and reflecting on all the fun we have had through the warmer months getting together with our friends for rallies, rides, etc. As usual we found ourselves wishing that we could have crammed more “fellowship and foolishness”, as Capt Cruiser so pithily put it, into the season.
One would naturally think: Plan more rides, plan more rallies. But the reality is that rallies are a lot of work for the planners and require the taking of vacation days – a commodity in always limited supply – by the attendees. One day rides are nice but the fellowship and foolishness is sadly limited, usually, to the lunch stop. In the end, Woodswoman hit upon a concept that would do credit to a devious, scheming masculine brain: why not set up some "One Night Stands"? ![]() The idea is this: some organizer finds a hotel/motel which has certain necessary attributes: * location within an easy day’s ride of most of the group, * reasonable rates, tolerance for parking lot fellowship, * and a breakfast/dinner restaurant within a short walk if not on the premises. Then the organizer publishes the details and interested VR members reserve rooms, ride in, spend the night – presumably a Saturday night – enjoying the company of their comrades at dinner and over drinks/fire in the parking lot, and ride out homeward in the morning. Easy for the organizer: no rides to figure out because the riding to/from the event is the “ride” part; no lunch stops to worry about. Easy for the participants: only one night’s charge for a room; no need to take a vacation day. But everyone gets the core benefit of a bigger event, the fun company of friends, for as long as he/she can stay awake on the Saturday night. Opinions?

Sounds great. I've had that ideal for years now but was affarid to bring it out of fear that no one would like it.
Even if we meet for lunch on Saturday and had a ride to the motel would be great. If the rider doesn't have to ride 500 miles. I'm an AM person so leaving home at 6 or 7 is no problem to me and Fatima during the summer months when she doesn't work. I think I would limit our selfs to 200 to 250 mile ride to most meet ups. It's not the ride up but the ride back home that gets very boring. I'm in. .

Chris has suggested a good idea. The concept may be best suited for smaller regional rallies, but it does not eliminate the option of someone using their vacation time to ride a greater distance to get to the rally if they so desire.

Tom, I do picture this being regional, and not getting too large.
The idea isn't to replace a rally. It's to improve on a lunchtime "meet & greet," without being too expensive for the attendees in either cash or vacation time -- and without being to much work for the organizer. .

We've done that at the Hub a few times. Once when a member from out of town was in town for 1 night only and was riding. We all just met up there and spent the night. It's fun to do that.

Uhhhh, well, we call it SAMM... We do this, and other things. We just did it in Rochester with great success. Although its good to publicize the concept, SAMM is already doin it.

Good on ya, Bill. But we haven't done it, to my knowledge, here in the Northeast in the almost 5 years I've belonged to the VR. Hence the trial balloon. .

I think some of us in the north east have done it. 2 years ago we had our ride to the most eastern point in the US (lubec Maine). Which went well. We all meet in Augusta Maine, rode to Lubec, slept there one night and the next day. Every one went home in different directions.
The only 2 people that rode together was me Paul and April, and we added one extra night to the trip on the way up. Had a great time. One of the best rides every. .
