15,000 years ago Missoula was under 900’ of water. Plains, MT was under 1500’. Near Heron a 2000' high by 20 mile wide tongue of ice blocked the Clark Fork backing up the river for 200 miles and raising the level of the river at Heron by 2000’. Late in the summer the water weakened the glacier until the entire ice dam broke. 550 cubic miles (larger than Lake Eire and Lake Ontario combined) of water headed for Eastern Washington.
Down on the Rathdrum Prairie, a wall of water filled with soil, trees, rocks and ice 2000’ high and moving at 78 mph would have created a noise so loud that it could be heard for 100 miles. The water crossed the Rathdrum Prairie leaving evidence from Drummond, MT and the Camus Prairie headed for the Basalt lava filled Eastern Washington Plateau. At this time it was covered with as much as 200’ of loess, a windblown dust as fertile as any in the world. Taking three major channels downhill, the Cheney Palouse, the Telford Crab Creek and the Grand Coulee, it ripped apart the earth removing all the soil, tearing into the bedrock and leaving what we today call the channeled Scablands. On the way, it left remarkable signs of its power. The Grand Coulee, a crack in the basalt forming the Western Edge of the huge lava bowl had a wall of water traveling at 58 mph and 300 feet high as it created and moved what we call Dry falls some 18 miles upstream from Soap Lake. Over in the Crab Creek drainage it scoured the land so bare that today the Drumheller channels are used today to design machines to go to Mars. The Cheney Palouse drainage created a huge plunge pool, now seen as the Palouse Falls. The water came so quickly that it backed up a huge lake against Wallula Gap, its only escape to the sea. This huge lake backed up and filled the TriCities basin from Yakima to Walla Walla and flooded up the Snake river channel for a 100 miles, leaving behind sediment in layers from each flood. All along these drainages, it left clear marks. From the scoured walls between Plains and Thompson Falls, to the huge ripples 35’ high and miles long in the Camas Prairie, to huge Kolk formed potholes and lakes, to huge Montana boulders carried inside icebergs called erratics and left as the water drained and the ice melted in Eastern Washington and the Willamette Valley of Oregon. Some blocks as big as a home. 550 cubic miles of water weight 2530 Billion tons or 5060 Trillion pounds not including the Ice bergs, boulders, soil, and trees it carried as well. It vibrated the earth in its orbit. Come ride with us on some of Western Montana's, Northern Idaho's and Eastern Washington's most scenic and wonderous 2 lane roads. 15,000 years later the Wescaleros will be riding across the landscape from Lewiston to Wallula Gap at speeds matching the Great Missoula Flood as they search out the best motorcycle roads and retrace the damage and carnage created by these Great floods. This is a rolling rally scheduled for June 17th to June 22st. It will start with a Meet and Greet in Lewiston on Monday night and a ride over LoLo on Tuesday morning the 18th. Motels are now available. This is a 2 lane motorcycle odyssey through the features and artifacts of Glacial Lake Missoula, its rapid draining and the creation within hours of what we now know as the Scablands. The route and options will be given to everyone. One route flood artifact oriented and another focusing on some optional wilderness two lane roads. This option will be called the Robert Frost, road not taken option. Each evening we will meet. Each morning we will review quickly what flood damage and artifacts we will be riding through that day. Two roads diverged in a wood (and desert), and I (we being Wescaleros), took the one less traveled by, and that has (will make) made all the difference Overview Map: ![]() Post two is reserved for motel information and an updated list of participants. Post three is reserved for other updates as they become available.

I'm penciling this in on my calendar. Not sure what I'll be up to next June, but I should know in the spring. I wanted to see the Missoula flood area on my trip out west this year and just didn't have time. So much to see!
