I am new to Volusia's and have fallen in love with the styling but not too familiar with them. I was looking at a 2002 that needed some engine work and after some great advise from people in the Help section decided to look at something in better condition. With that said I have 2 others I have been looking at and would like some opinions. Either a 2006 800VL or 2003 1500 both are around $2800 and in good shape. They both have about 18,000 miles

Super tough choice. More cc are always nice, but fuel injection makes life so much easier from running to tuning it up.
If it were me, and I was looking for the daily commuter, most weather runner with great gas mileage, I'd pick the 800. For a less occasional weekend kind of ride where gas mileage and easy starts aren't as important, get more cc's.

Probably a C90 ................ and that's the one I'd go for.

I was in the same spot only the C90 was way more money. Now I wish I had gone with the bigger bike. I love my C50, don't get me wrong, but am planning on upgrading to a bigger bike. Like one of our members says - there's no replacement for displacement.

It all depends on how you will ride and where you will ride. If you plan on using it only on weekends and will have a mix of highway and back roads, or just highway, then I would get the C90. If you plan on using it for backroads and twisting it through the turns, I would get the C50. I started on the C50 but it was too underpowered for the riding I end up doing which unfortunately includes highways no matter where I need to get too.

Depending on the kind and amount of riding you do, it doesn't take long for riders of 800cc bikes to begin suffering "bigger bike envy". 1500/C90 are good bikes with one exception, 18000 miles is EXACTLY the point at which the stator in the electrical system fails. If it hasn't been upgraded it most likely will need to be. Last I heard that was running about $400. Not a huge issue, but an issue non-the-less.
