Need some expert advice. I just purchased some tires for my bike, so I went to a small bike shop near me and asked, how much to mount them. He said 20 bucks each......sounds good to me, but when I asked if that included balancing? He said "As long as the blue dot is within 6 inches of the valve stem, it would'nt need it.
Is this true? Logic tells me otherwise. |

Yeah I've heard of it. The factory puts a dot on lightest side of the tire and when mounting the stem goes on that side acting as a balance weight. Will that be enough though is the question and still may need balancing.

i must just be lucky. I've used the "dot" method for years and my bikes have always rolled smooth as silk, no hops, no wobbles, and no weird wear. Going down the road I can let go of my bars and the bike tracks smoothly, with the bike on a lift I can lock the throttle open with the bike in fifth and there is no visible bobble in the rear. (my own version of spin balancing)

Continentals don't require balancing. The last set of them I tried to have balanced the guy at the Honda dealer said "They didn't need any weights so we didn't charge you." They now stock Continentals on the shelf. That's on a sportbike, too.

Put the rear tire on last night, it was a breeze and rides well, no balancing just the dot method.
Also, put some 2 1/2in. lowering bones on while the wheel was off and I really like the feel. I am 6'2" 240lbs and feel like I am sitting on a chopper. |
