Study: Grand Canyon may be as old as dinosaurs
When I visited the North Rim of the Grand Canyon a National Park Ranger guide let the wife and I hold an ancient rock taken from the bottom of the canyon that I remember her saying was about 2 billion years old. Instead of being shaped by the Colorado River 5 or 6 million years ago, a new analysis of the minerals in the 280-mile (450-km) gorge suggests it was formed by a much older river likely frequented by the dinosaurs that roamed North America some 70 million years ago.

The dirt at the bottom may be that old but who says how long it took to erode it? I will bet it took longer to build it up than it did to tear it down. That arcticle does not make sense to me.
I am really amazed that those 'professors' were able to evaluate that 'the land looked much different back then'.

any rock you can find on this planet with the exception of volcanic rocks (which maybe only a year old if from an active volcano) are millions of years old! There's dinos in there somewhere thats for sure!
BUT I suppose no one wants to excavate the grand canyon to find out??...lol

The Rock the National Park Ranger let us hold was about 2 Billion years old and even if I had walked to the bottom of the canyon I would not have been able to tell a really 2 billion old rock from something that may be only a few million years old. The deeper you go down into the grand canyon the older the rocks are in many places. But the canyon could have been cut by the Colorado River 5 or 6 million years ago exposing the old rocks as many scientists use to believe, but a new analysis of the minerals in the 280-mile (450-km) gorge suggests it was formed by a much older river likely frequented by the dinosaurs that roamed North America some 70 million years ago. Of course suggests is not scientific proof but it sure is interesting for me to imagine the canyon may have started to form 70 million years ago based on this new scientific analysis of minerals in the canyon rather than a mere 5 or 6 million years ago. ![]() With the Colorado River or an Ancient River cutting the canyon over the millennium it's probable not a good place to look for dinosaurs trapped and preserved in formerly soft material. Erosion is likely to have carried them away. But it would be interesting to find dinosaur remains in the canyon. The canyon has been studied a lot and the average age of the rock exposed in the canyon is about 273 million years.
