I have 2 kids who live in San Antonio now, have not been down to see them yet. Is 1,019 miles one way, so thinking leave on the 5th (high of 49 here), spend the night in the Hammond La area, around 508 miles, then hit San Antonio Thursday night-511 miles, catch a spurs game friday, head home Monday.
Only coming home, thinking about taking an extra day and "touring" New Orleans as I have never been there. Was thinking about checking out rt 23 as it is the southern most road in la, but checked it out in street view on google and does not appear like it will be a very scenic road. Maybe tour the areas hit hard by Katrina. Supposedly a high of 49 when I would leave, hope it isn't snowing when I get back Only down side is it will be pretty much nothing but highway miles..... but I do prefer them on my bike over a car any day of the week. Yea, just talked myself into a bike ride.

You might consider Hwy. 90 out of San Antonio all the way to NO. It joins with IH10 every now and then but it is a much better ride. The commercial truck traffic on 10 can be heavy and dangerous and also pretty fast speeds. 100+ vehicle crash last week due to early morning fog outside of Beaumont. 500 miles per day, with gas stops, lunch and breaks should be close to 10-12 hour day. If you don't drive at night, you'll have to be aggressive and keep your stops to a minimum. Good luck and know I'm in Houston in case you need some help.

thanks for the info, but already had it routed that way. I am thinking about adding a few miles to the trip and out of Beaumont, drop down 124 to 87 into galveston to see if I can get a nice ocean view, then back up to 10/90. Only adds about 60 miles I believe.

Good for you. Keep in mind that west of Houston, there is a big difference in 90A and 90. In my opinion, it's 90A that is the easiest run. It runs out of S/W Houston and is the old road to San Antonio before 10 was built. 90 is not contiguous. It is broken up by 10 several times and is not functional. Out of Galvez, hook up with 6 to 90A.

I rode from Houston to NOLA a few years ago, took the slab because I didn't have time for the back roads and bayous. The Basin bridges are interesting, you can gauge former water levels by comparing the length of a semi to the water marks on the pillars. On the slab you can easily make the ride in a day. Have fun, I don't have a reason to go to San Antonio anymore, the kid moved to Vegas.
