Default Might want to check here for rust...

Was replacing my oem lightbar lamps with the GE 4411, thought I would pull the headlight and put dialectic grease on all of the connections.
Glad I did.
Externally, my bike is in really nice condition, looks pretty much new for the most part. Pulled the headlamp and besides having quite a few bugs and some how about 10 of these type of small "nuts", there was quite a bit of rust on the bucket. Had progressed to more than just surface rust. I could have seen it eating thru from the inside in a year or 2.
I normally use por-15 as, imo, it is about as good as it gets for rust, but didn;t have any so for now I just sanded off all of the loose stuff and used a liquid rust converter I had on hand from when I did my swimming pool. I normally would have painted over it, but I am ordering some por-15 so just left it as is for now.

If you have not had the headlamp apart in quite a while, I personally would suggest you pull it and check the inside of the bucket and if there is no rust, give it a good waxing before you put it back together.

Great suggestion. One thing, I'm not sure what your reference "por-15" is, can you elaborate? It may be common to others but I don't have a clue! BTW, I use Naval Jelly to remove rust, I have used it since the 70's. It is now marketed by LocTite.

POR-15 is commonly used to coat the inside of fuel tanks to prevent rust from forming.

For rust removal, my current, favorite rust dissolver is Evapo Rust, which is available from Auto-Zone.

por-15 is similar to a paint, but what it does is form a very hard surface and prevents air from getting to the metal, thereby preventing rust.
Often used on restoration of cars on parts like the frame etc. At one time it was pretty much the premier rust preventer, but as it became so popular, of course other companies have come out with something similar.
I just stick with it as I know it works - I would guess the other quality brands are as good.
I had a 1977 GL1000 I restored. The exhaust for it was pretty expensive and could at the time, be fairly hard to even find one in decent shape that had not already started to rust.
That is when I discovered por-15.
Researching stopping rust, I kept reading about it, but it wasn't the cheapest "paint" and no one local had it, so I tried numerous other remedies. None of them worked and the rust always started coming back.
Finally broke down and ordered the por-15. The black was actually pretty much the same color as the oem exhaust also.
I rode that bike for over 2 years after I "por-15'd" it and it was still rust free when I sold the bike.
As mentioned, it is not really what you would call "cheap", but it works.
You don;t really want to paint something with it like the gas tank etc, as you use a brush to apply it, but for places like inside the headlight bucket etc........worth every penny imo.
Just google "por-15"
I normally just do a quick search and wherever I find the lowest price in about 15 minutes is where I buy it. Not worth spending too much time hunting down the best price for the amount of money saved.

One thing to keep in mind about POR-15 is that it is not UV stable. If you're putting it somewhere that sunlight will hit it, you MUST topcoat for it to last. (one of our favorite coatings at work)
