My back gave me trouble also. I got some handlebar risers with pullback and a backrest and I'm good to go now.

I have 4 bulging discs. I have a backrest and highway pegs and couldn't be more comfortable...the pegs allow me to keep my back pressed up tight against the backrest solid and straight. I couldn't make the long trips w/o either one, my back used to kill me after 50mi. I can now ride 300mi easy to only stop for fuel or nature...

Risers with pullback are ideally the best advice to keep you upright, the backrest is for the support once you are upright...
