Wifey passed her MSF class last weekend, and she's supposed to go to the DMV tomorrow to get her motorcycle endorsement.
We have been searching for her first bike, and have pretty much settled on this one. Just wanted to see what y'all thought about it. (and whether or not we are getting a good deal) It's a 1994 honda shadow 600, that a guy bought and modified for his daughter to ride. Description says: Black with Red Pearl Ghost Flames Cobra Drag Pipes Harley Davidson Buckhorn Handle Bars 2" rear lowering kit 2 brand new tires (10 miles) 8000 original miles. I called about it, and he told me the carbs were re-jetted for the pipes, and that both carbs have just been cleaned and tuned. I also spy some engine guards/crash bars on it. he said he lowered it and put the buckhorns on it because his daughter is 5' tall, and my wife is about 5'3" so I figured it will be plenty low for her to flat-foot at a stoplight. He is firm on the price of $1650, and says he's got $3400 in the bike. If everything he tells me is true, i believe he does have that much in it. We're pretty set on this bike, as long as everything is what he says it is. What do you guys think? Wifey and i didn't want to spend more than 1200 on her first bike, but I figure the pipes, handlebars, new tires, and carb work are worth the extra $450 we weren't allotting in the budget. |

When you look at it check the brakes, the tires for cracking, and the chain play. The chain shouldn't be sloppy and should be lubed. If you see rust on the chain then you will know that it hasn't been lubed. Check the hoses around the carbs for rot.
New riders tend to keep their foot on the brake and ride it. The bike is a 94 with 8k miles. That's an 18 year old bike. That means that the bike hasn't been ridden or has only been ridden 444 miles per year.

i was a bit concerned about the low mileage, but figured the carb work should have taken care of any gumming up from storage.
will definitely check the hoses for rot. Is there anything else i should look for, if the bike's sat around a little during its life? |

Looks a good deal... Nice bike.. Will be loud with those pipes!
a 600 will last her a while before the "larger " bug hits- IF EVER and at that price not much to lose- resale would be VERY close if not more than this if selling in the spring time If shes shorter then the lowering is a good thing.. Will she be comfy and happy with the tall handlebars?.. Has she ridden it - Sat on it to make sure the position is comfy?. Fairly pricy and a pain to adjust and bring back to stock if not.. are original parts included if you need to return to stock height etc?

Can there be a test ride? If he just cleaned and tuned the carbs and bought new tires, when was the last time it actually was ridden? Or was it just fixed up to sell? Old bikes and low miles are not always the best deal but the price may be good. Blue Book has trade in at $1155 and retail at $1765.

I have had that bike at one time in my life and two things I did not like. One, it's top heavy, and two everytime I had to push it while sitting on it the kick stand would clip the back of my leg and cause me lots of pain.
Other than that it was a great bike.

As mentioned, sometimes older low mileage machines can have leaks develop from dried out seals, gaskets, etc. The saying; 'If you don't use it you loose it' can come true if not used occasionally. Try to find out how frequently it was driven.

i dont know if he has the stock parts, but I'll definitely ask him. if we buy the bike i'll take them home if he still has them. Quote:
funny you mention the blue book value, my mother-in-law told wifey the same exact thing this morning i would sure love to get it for 1200ish, but the seller said he can't move on price. and i rationalize it to wifey by saying if we got another (cheaper) bike and put tires on it, and had carb work done, and put pipes on it, it'd end up costing us more than this one. i just hope it's not been sitting too long, and will ask the seller how frequently it was ridden. thanks for the suggestion. gotcha; will do. thanks for the suggestion. |

Bring 1400.00 with you and if he doesn't take it then walk away. Everyone is selling their bikes now instead of storing them for the winter.
