^hmm, yeah I thought about taking 1500 up there to see what he'd do. (the reason i said 1500 instead of the 1400 like you suggested, is i didn't want to insult him-- seeing as how he already told me he was firm on the price)

I guess it's not the end of the world if I don't get the bike. i tend to jump into these type of things headfirst, and more often than not it ends up costing me money. :/

My first bike was a 1999 Honda shadow VLX 600. I paid 900 for it when I bought it. Sold it a yr and a half later for 1500. But it did have 23,000 miles on it when I bought it. They really are a great bike. The only problem I had with it in the entire 1.5 yrs was the starter switch went bad. Its a great starter bike and I think she will love it. Mine had the cobra drag pipes on it and the sound was awesome. I still can't get my Volusia to sound as good.

I'd be concerned about the age of the bike and the low miles too.

Here's some other bikes in your area that would be good starters:
2000 Suzuki Intruder VS800
1991 suzuki gs 500
1996 suzuki 800cc intruder
Kawasaki Ninja (EX500)motorcycle
2001 KAWASAKI VULCAN

If you do find any issues with it you just need to decide what is fixable. If the guys spent money on it hopefully he has receipts.

Handlebars can be moved or replaced at little cost or effort, replacing a couple of hoses may only cost a few dollars. Even if you had to replace a chain and sprocket and rear brake pads the cost would be minimal and you would know everything was sweet.

I wouldn't worry about insulting him. Just ask him if he'll come down on the price while you are there. If not just say OK thanks and that you have some other bikes to look at that are newer and in the same price range.

So a few weeks have gone by, thought i would update. We got the wife's bike today.

When we went down there to look at the first time, it would not crank due to flooding on the front carb. The guy had the front carb rebuilt, and had the fuel pump replaced. I got receipts for the work performed.

today, I test rode it for the wife, and it ran very well. We are going to go for our first ride together hopefully this Saturday.

congrats on the new bike for the wife. Let her take it real slow at first and always( and I mean always) listen to her when she is talking about the bike. She may ask about something that you didn't notice and it could lead to big money down the road in repairs or an accident.(lets hope not).

We have been searching for her first bike, and have pretty much settled on this one. Just wanted to see what y'all thought about it. (and whether or not we are getting a good deal)

It's a 1994 honda shadow 600, that a guy bought and modified for his daughter to ride.

Description says:

Black with Red Pearl Ghost Flames
Cobra Drag Pipes
Harley Davidson Buckhorn Handle Bars
2" rear lowering kit
2 brand new tires (10 miles)
8000 original miles.

I called about it, and he told me the carbs were re-jetted for the pipes, and that both carbs have just been cleaned and tuned. I also spy some engine guards/crash bars on it.

he said he lowered it and put the buckhorns on it because his daughter is 5' tall, and my wife is about 5'3" so I figured it will be plenty low for her to flat-foot at a stoplight.

He is firm on the price of $1650, and says he's got $3400 in the bike. If everything he tells me is true, i believe he does have that much in it.

We're pretty set on this bike, as long as everything is what he says it is. What do you guys think? Wifey and i didn't want to spend more than 1200 on her first bike, but I figure the pipes, handlebars, new tires, and carb work are worth the extra $450 we weren't allotting in the budget.

Hit the buy it now button....

congrats to her and on you getting a new riding partner...sizewise it should be great for her to learn and may find theres no need to quickly move up to something larger.
Tell her to enoy. Bike looks like its in great shape.
