How hard is it to find out axle lengths and diameters? I need to know the difference in sizes of a C50 and a 1986 GV1400 Cavalcade. I have a project going on and need the specs. Any help would be appreciated...

I can get you lenth and diamer of a C50 axle, I have a spare one out in the shop, will post later today.
Sometimes, not always, diameter and lenth of bolts are listed in the parts breakdown listed on bike sites like ronayers. http://www.ronayers.com/

If you do find a source that gives M/C axle diameters would you please post it here? For the longest time I wanted to mount a 19" wheel to the front. I searched hard looking for info on axle sizes but never found anything.

Dug this out of the Motors Transmissions and Drives section. There's more stuff in there you can go through, this is a start.

I didn't get as many miles in as I wanted but I now have over 100 on the drive and all is fine so far. The GV Drive is wider than the C50 so a spacer needs to be made to set the distance from the hub to the drive. The axle is larger, so I had to make a press fit bushing for the axle bolt to bush it up to the same size as the GV Drive. Since everything is wider, I then had to machine the spacer between the brake hub and the frame down in length. The C50 axle bolt being shorter than the GV will not be long enough for the hole to line up with the slots in the castle nut. I have some nylon insert locknuts ordered that should solve this. Right now I have used the stock nut with a little loc-tite on it. On the driveshaft end, take the large spline adapter out of the GV unit, it comes out like the C50 driveshaft does, seal first and then the circlip retainer. Once the adapter is removed, I took the spring out and removed the splined pinion coupler fro, both the GV and the C50. I then installed the C50 coupler on the GV drive and used the C50 nut and spring. The C50 nut is longer than the threaded part of the GV gear but allows plenty of thread engagement for attatchment but doesn't allow you to dimple the nut to keep from backing off like the factory does. YOU MUST USE LOC-TITE ON THE PINION NUT OR IT CAN BACK OFF! The C50 spring and driveshaft can now be installed into the drive unit as well as a C50 seal. I used a die grinder and a rotary file to elongate the holes in the swing arm.

According to wemoto.com '86 Cavalcade parts listing, Cav rear axle is nominally 20mm diam. No further detail on length.

On this GV1400, I was wondering if maybe it would be best to get a longer axle bolt or have one made...to be able to insert the cotter pin. Or as Viper and I talked about...counter-bore the axle hole to enable screwing the castle nut on further... I fully believe the GV1400 is a viable option, just needs some tweaking. I did however get lost in all the technical jargon about taking this off and putting this on, etc. I would like to see more understandable instructions for us grunt mechanics...(ones that can do all the work, just don't know the lingo...)

So at 20mm the GV axle is not an option 'cause the rest of the drive components, wheel hub, bearings, and brake plate are all the smaller C50 O.D.
Seems like many hog alot of material off that final drive case in an attempt to fit the fake swingarm, I would hope there would be sufficient material to counterbore for the C50 axle. He said he could get the nut on, just could not quite thread it far enough to reach the axle hole. Another option would be an old aircraft maintenance trick. Use a nut that has holes drilled in it for safety wire and just safety wire the nut to the swingarm. It won't come off. I briefly read his descritption, all that "technical jargon" was just about using the C50 drive driveshaft coupler on the GV1400 drive. Once you have one of these drives in hand, the explaination will be alot clearer.
