I guess I'm just one of the peole that things that is some of the most foolish stuff I've ever seen.
If folks want to ride 1000 miles in 24 hours, cool. I just never got the idea of an award for it. Really doesn't seem like that much of a big deal. I guess the fact I'm still pretty young, still only 44, makes it seem like it's not that radical an idea. Someone here already stated that they did it in 18.5 hours, so to do it in 24 would seem, while not easy, certainly not some extreme effort in endurance. I suppose a lot of that depends on what bike your riding. I think it would be very doalbe on my bike, althought I would want to get out of my area first. Way too many big cities to have to get through. NY, Philly, DC, Baltimore are all within about 2-3 hours of me, and I would think hitting them at the wrong time could surely slow you down. The Delaware River is to my east, and 50 miles south, the Ocean is to the east. I guess I'd have to head west! At least to do it in the least amount of time.

I did both the 1000 and the 1500 milers. the 1000 miler was done in 17 1/2 hours. I would call it just a long ride. The 1500 was the challenge. Those extra 500 miles did make a difference. That was the first time I used those 5 hour energy drinks. Even thou I stopped to help at a car wreck I managed to get all the required miles in the 24 hrs.

I rode around Lake Michigan (1100 miles) in less than 24hrs, but never submitted the paperwork, don't really need the certificate. Keep in mind that the SS1000 is the shortest of the IBA rides, sort of a token ride they threw in to help people get their feet wet on long distance riding. The other rides are progressively more difficult and most require multiple long distance days like the 10-10ths ride (10,000 miles in 10 days). Most people can do a SS1000, but it takes a lot more to do it several days in a row.

Comfort and fatigue I suppose are the big issues. Most of my riding is all day rides or road trips so mine was set up for comfort. Windshield & lowers to block the wind, Mustang with a backrest and highway pegs to change up my position. Around town I had loud pipes and frequently took off the shield, but not for the road trips. Made one 3,000 mile trip with my loud pipes and I think 10 hrs a day of loud pipes wore me out far more than the riding did....and I couldn't hear my music. After that the pipes stayed home. |

Well, Phil, you're not far off the mark. I date back to the California motorcycle touring group. I have actually, many years ago, had my falling out with the IBA. I was a member, per internet days, when both the rides and certifications were difficult and I and many others were against the California 1000 and 1500 rides being Iba events.
I soften in my old age. Now that I'm retired from distance riding, I respect anyone who wants to strap it on. Because of a slow start on day one, I had to pull an all day 800 miler to catch up with miataboy. This spring... And when I pulled into that hotel in Louisiana at 1Am I was glad someone was thoughtful enough to have made me a tall vodka/cranberry. The last 50 miles was a gps led adventure over single lane gravel in delta country in the middle of the night. Remind me not to push shortest buttons on a gps in the middle of the night. I saw a day when everyone would be a member. On the right day you can do a saddlesore ride and be home for a late supper on today's bikes. By the time I did my second 3000, I was like you and no longer interested. I did it for me, it was my bachelor party in 1991! And it was insane. And we ended up in Vegas.

Sounds like a good bachelor party. I would have rather done something like that than what I did for my party.
