Default My New Ural: The Adventure and Money Shots

So the new (old) Ural arrived at 9:30 last night. The mysterious man from Michigan who brought it to me was found on UShip. This service is Great! You list your shipment and guys bid on it. My transporter wasn't fancy... but the bike got here in one piece and that's enough for me!

It was dirty, it was black, it had a hideous windshield... and it didn't run. Some cajoling and I got it to run on one cylinder for a minute. Then we pushed it up the driveway and into the garage. Where I soaked myself in sweat trying to kick-start this Russian Piece of Crap (RPOC)

Now for the good. Overall, for a $2000 sidecar rig it was cosmetically in really good shape. I paid $250 to have it shipped here... and $28 at the auto-zone today 2,278 later, I have a leaking RPOC.

I bought new tires, the dealer warehousing the bike said the tires were dry rotted. The tires are OK... so now I'll have spares and can change them one at a time....so now, after some spares and some purchases at Heindl Engineering, I have a $2500 RPOC.

I had nightmares all night of being spanked by a large woman from Vladivostok, spanked until I died and I went to **** and the devil made me try to kick that RPOC forever until my legs were like Secretariat and I was strong enough to rise up and destroy Satan in a pool of his own festering bile. Then the large woman turned into Anna Kournikova and I won her bey defeating Slava Koslov and Sergei Federov in a Handicap cage match...

Clearly, I was anticipating what was come.

The girls are in Georgia. It was me and Sletvana... my dirty little Russian secret. I walked out in the garage at 7AM this morning and she was waiting for me. Dripping oil in anticpation...

I realized the oil leak would have to wait, maybe forever until I find a proper gasket. It was no worse than your typical old britbike or Harley leak, so I'll just keep the oil topped off. The bike does not run and something I can tell you from experience guys, dudes buy bikes thinking they'll fix them up but if it doesn't show up running, you've got about a week to get it running. Because if you don't, it will never run. Fact...

Ripped all the rubber off, removed the carbs and intakes, got everything loose from it except the engine and wiring harness. In the Ural manual, it says they use K&N filters.... Now this is not an embellishment, the air cleaner was made out of what looked to be braided and bundled horsehair, and there was a quart of oil mixed with rancid water in the spot where it went... there was just an open hole after that leading to the crankcase...

RPOC

Scrubbing, cursing, tinkering wiping thing down in oil and carb cleaner and moly grease. Fumes enough to blow my home to kingdome come. I wonder how you say,

"That's just not going to fit in there" in Russian? I've heard it before, but it was late and I'd been drinking.

"You'll need to oil that again"

"Something just fell out on the ground, where does it go"

"In space, noone can here a carburetor scream"

"Is it important to have the hose at that angle"

You get the point... RPOC.

So now some more good. There is nothing on the machine more complicated than a simple lawn mower. I Mr. E., had everything back together and sparkling by 7PM. The carbs were actually Mikunis 28s and pretty easy to work on, all the drives appeared to be sorted out, whheels and tires were actually pretty sharp... the battery showed up sorted out and simple water lead and electrolytes... old and undamaged. Only 9,000 miles on the odometer. The sidecar looks great and is worth the price of the bike.

I did TCLOCKS and put the key in, I remember the sweat bath last night...

RPOC...

She started on the first kick, black smoke issued forth from both pipes and she settled in, no smoke... just burning some extra gas. It warmed up for 5 minutes and we had our first ride. The bike shifts hard and there are some adjustments to make there... but I took her all the way to 60MPH before discetion became the greater part of valor.

Perfect RPOC, I lover and I'm keepin it.

Now for the Money baby, 11 hours of hard work and $2500...

Great beginnings, Mr E. I'm sure this would be a great post to move to the as yet un-created Forum "Former Volusia Riders Who Own Boxer Twins".

Keep us posted.
