The following morning we rode across into Illinois and along the Mississippi river and then to Winterset Iowa. We camped at the City Park there that night, and then went to see the sites the next day. Winterset is the birthplace of John Wayne, and they have a nice little museum in the house where he was born. Madison County, (Winterset is the county seat) is home to several covered bridges, and was the location for the movie "The Bridges of Madison County" We only had time to see one covered bridge, and that was in the city park. We rode home from there on Sunday... The total trip was right at 900 miles. It was a good way to end the summer before the boys went back to school.
