Default Ammo Boxes for Saddle Bags?

i was lookin through CL and found a bike that had large metal boxes on both sides of the rear fenders, that looked like big ammo boxes.. so it gave me the idea to take two surplus ammo boxes and make "hard bags" out of em. has anyone done this? if not, does anyone have ideas on how to do this? i think this will be a fun, and rarely-seen add on to the bike

Dr. Frankenstrom did that very thing for a V-Strom.

These are the saddle bags that many low/no income bikers use. Similar to the cardboard box that out of work people use in lieu of an actual house.

Makes quite a statement and will set you apart.

Have you considered old Samsonite luggage for hard bags or old 80's Adidas gym bags if you like the leather style?

The above is merely a jest, do not get too upset. LOL

I ride a KLR650 dual sport when I'm not riding my Nomad, and there's a lot of people out there using 20mm ammo cans for saddle bags (dual sport riders call them "panniers"). They're usually pretty cheap to find, easy to mount, and many paint or powdercoat them for a more professional look. Here's a couple pics of what they look like:

Another popular option is Pelican 1450 cases. Pelican cases are practically bullet proof and, when mounted properly, can be easily removed for taking into the hotel room at the end of the day.

Not just dual sport riders, that's a European term used extensively across the pond for saddlebags.

Pelican cases are tough but only bulletproof if you are going to throw the rounds at them. They do however make excellent DSLR cases when you cut out the inner foam accordingly.

ive see the boxes on the dual sports, and have always liked the look. but i never thought about doin it to a cruiser until i saw the one on CL that had black ones. for some reason, the square boxes on a round bike look real cool

I wanted to do that to my C50T this winter but was forced to trade her in when I upgraded to a Vic CC..... Love the look. Good Luck.
