Default Forward Control extension mod

I wonder if anyone have made their own Forward Control mod. Because my Vol have new crashbar which do not have full bar, it's a 1/2 bars install each sides. The original crashbar was damaged from last month accident ( I posted in Rider down "motorcycle and car accident" ). I had 3 1/2" Forward control extension and I had to remove it and restored it to OEM because new crashbar have change entire geometry. I have to find forward control that go over the crash bar. I did look through Ebay for 5 1/2" Kurykuran Forward control and it cost nearly 1k. I can't afford it and it's not worth for my "salvaged" motorcycle as Insurance now called it.

Since that I'm very good with metal work, I could make one of my own design but the biggest issue is that I don't have acetylene cutter/welder or MIG welder to do the job (I have Mapp gas torch which is hot enough to soften metals anyway). My friend have one so I would have to pay him some $$'s to do it for me. I would have to do it with big vise and muscle to bend rods into shape I wanted. I would have two rods that meet together to provide strength to withstand stress from foot on pegs.

I would like anyone give me suggestions or link that I can take a look at.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, since I haven't gotten the 3 1/2" extentions yet, but can't you just get some adapters to move the bars forward more?

HB Smalley's Adapters

Or do these only work with John's Kit? Is that the forward control extention you have or something different?

My vol "split" crashbar is much wider than I see on the crashbar in pic of HB Smalley's adatper. I never thought that I still can use John's kit but I wanted to extend to 5 1/2 inches to stretch my legs. I'm 5' 10" and my right knee get stiff when I get off the bike with stock forward control. John's Kit does help but still I wanted more than 3 1/2 inches to stretch out.

I can fabricate home-made Forward Control extension of my style.. It's not hard for me to do it. The design is that I want it go over and inside of crashbar so I can rest my boot against inner bar during long trip.

If I did fabricate one, I would be more than happy to post pic of it. I don't think it won't be done until Spring time due to my unstable work schedule.

I know the Honda guys use Scootmods for their 6" extensions (hondashadow.net for lots a pics and reviews). I was looking into those before I sold my Shadow.

The site shows extentions for Honda or Yamaha, but there's a custom page where they might work something for you. Worth a shot.

That looks cool. But the problem is that I don't have program that design and save as .pbx format for them to machine it for me. I am good with old fashioned drafting but not CAD. I learned drafting back in Highschool in 80's so I'm way behind on that. I'm kinda rusty on caliper (analog or digital) because I haven't use it for very long time.

I was thinking design that I want is wrought iron that I can bend it into shape and weld it together to make it very strong then bolt it on bike. This would make it look nice on my bike.

Why in the world would you need 5-1/2" at 5' 10" when John's where plenty long for me and I'm 6'3"...do you plan on laying down?

I dunno why 3 1/2 seem not long enough for me. I would just measure to be sure that I won't extend it too far that my boots can't reach. . If it's 5 1/2 from what I checked on Kuryakyn in Ebay, it is up and over the crash bar rather than straight. Which is why it is rise higher than forward.

Also it all depends on individual body, Some have short legs and long body and some have long legs and short body but both in same height. One of my friend is as tall as I am but he had hard time getting on his Vol because of his short legs. I told him to try out my Vol with John's Kit and was 2 inches lowered. He got on no problem and his leg stretched alot straighter than mine. When I got on my Vol, it seem that my knees are still bent (80 degree angle) comparing to OEM setting which made my knees more bent (90 degree angle). It's a little difference IMHO. What I wanted is 65-70 degree angle.

In fact is that I am planning to make one that is up and over the lower crash bar and it won't make it like "laid back" position
