Whenever I see spikes on the handlebar ends I always think about how much that would hurt in an accident.

Some things, like accidents, I prefer not to think about. On the other hand, that's why I took advanced rider training and always ride in full gear. With all the risks I take on a daily basis, the spikes don't concern me too much.

If you're hitting the end of your handlebar grip hard enough to do damage you're already in some serious trouble

i have those grips, i can see very few situations where these would stab me in the event of an accident. more like poke me when i am tooling around the garage....

^das what I was thinking. I'd rather get stabbed by a sharp spike, than a blunt end-weight.

Doubt I could put the on my bike, though. I'm sure they'd rip right throught the bike cover on a windy day....

They are not sharp. I have had them on several bikes in the past and my current bikes now. No problem with a cover either.
