Default Kickstand Mod: Step-by-Step, with photos

I am a visual learner, and have always found "how-tos" with photos tremendously helpful.

When working on my bike, I don't believe I have ever done anything right the 1st time, so this is your chance to learn from my mistakes. Happy wrenching!

Here is everything you need to know to do the "Kick stand Mod" to keep your bike from accidentally falling over.

Check out my blog for all the details!

Nice write-up, Ed. If you have a dremel you don't even have to remove anything, just carefully have at it.

Wouldn't backing into any down sloped parking space save the need to do this. not to mention someone who may grind off too much and then cause the kickstand to fail and fold over the wrong way and droping the bike?

Just askin....

Nope...you can't grind off to much....you are just grinding off a nub. Not possible for the kickstand to "fold over". And any biker with any savvy at all will back into a down-slope spot. This is just a simple preventative measure that MAY save someone from having to pick their bike up off the ground sometime.

Sometimes a sloped spot is not available. This prevents the drops that have happened to dozens of people.

Grinding the whole nub off allows the kickstand to move further forward and stop at the frame with no danger of going too far forward.

At least one member's bike fell off the kickstand after being parked at the dealership by the mechanic after an oil change.

ohh i've done many dumb things but putting blame off of one's self is not one of them. I remember reading the 03's were the worst?

Human error, end of story....

This will eliminate human error. There are things you can to to prevent dropping your bike, but you can't always account for everything, including someone touching your bike when you ain't there. This eliminates any error (yours or someone else's) and prevents the kickstand folding.

"Back in 2001 when Suzuki released the VL800, it was quickly discovered by owners that there was a significant design flaw with the kickstand."

This statement tickles me!

The only "flaw" is the rider! If one of these bikes falls while on the kickstand, the blame is 100% rider. Not a "flaw"!

Of course it is....doesn't mean something cannot be improved on. Personally, I like the looks of the extra lean.....and for the record....30+ years of riding and never had any of my 13 bikes fall while on the kickstand...or while NOT for that matter. Probably just jinxed myself with THAT statement, Pat!
